The Palm Sunday doves

One of the most beautiful memories of the inhabitants of Limone sul Garda is the magic of the Palm Sunday doves. Fathers and grandfathers cut off the new shoots of wild fig trees and bring them home. The children were waiting for them, curious to see the tools on the table. Scissors, nails, various sticks and copper wires were the instruments used to create this great handcrafted work.
With patience, the hands, hardened by the daily work, cut off the fig and extract the marrow like substance from within the shoots. Then the same hands weave them with workmanship making little doves, white peace symbols.
Mothers and grandmothers gave then the last touch, drawing the eyes with black pencil. At the end, the little doves were hung on olive twigs, for being blessed on Palm Sunday.
